Lesson two - theories

Adorno and Horkheimer created a theory "The Culture Industry", it explains a method that turns out products. However, these products always end up being the same and repetitive. We can relate this to "mass culture" which represents everything as standard formats with no originality or uniqueness, because of this mass culture it has turned into the audience expecting the outcome which means nothing new is ever introduced and so the industry continues to have the same standardization. On the other hand, people within the industry make claims to originality, although they still are the same. This means something tiny could be different about the person but it's not big enough to class them as original, hence them being the same as everyone else in the industry - Adorno and Horkheimer realised this and created a theory titled 'Pseudo individuality'.

An example of this is the band JLS, from the images below we can clearly understand how they have been molded by the industry:

In this image we can identify the band has little fashion and appear nervous from the way their standing.

In this second image we can easily see the transformation with their style and confidence; posing for the camera.
